S. Korea, China, Japan reaffirm commitment to resolving NK nukes

BALI, Indonesia (Yonhap) -- The leaders of South Korea, China and Japan reaffirmed their commitment Saturday to working together to resolve the North Korean nuclear standoff and deepen all-round cooperation, the presidential office said.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda held a trilateral meeting on the sidelines of regional summits with Southeast Asian and other nations in the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

"The three leaders shared an understanding that they should cooperate closely at a time when uncertainties in the world economy are growing, so they can contribute to stability and development in Northeast Asia and reviving the world economy," the presidential office said in a statement.

They also agreed to continue to cooperate to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue, it said.

The leaders praised September's establishment in Seoul of a cooperation secretariat handling joint projects between the three countries, and agreed to cooperate to develop the office into a model of regional cooperation, the statement said.

"There has been brisk cooperation among the three countries in various areas this year and this is also a meaningful year as there was progress in institutionalizing (the cooperation)," Lee said in his opening remarks, referring to the secretariat's establishment.

"The secretariat upgraded cooperation between the three countries to a new level," he said. "Cooperation between the three countries will contribute to stability in Northeast Asia and global economic recovery amid increasing uncertainties in the global economy."

South Korean Ambassador Shin Bong-kil, the first head of the secretariat, also attended the summit.

The Northeast Asian neighbors have annually held a three-way meeting on the sidelines of regional summits organized by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). They hold another three-way summit in one of the three countries alternately, with Japan hosting this year's meeting in May.

In the May summit, South Korea and China expressed strong solidarity for Japan, which was then suffering from the aftermath of March's massive earthquake and tsunami as well as the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. Lee and Wen visited villages close to the nuclear accident site.

In his opening comments, Noda expressed "deep gratitute" for the support South Korea and China provided Japan in the wake of the disasters in March.

Noda said the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was heading toward stabilization and promised to continue to provide South Korea and China with related information in a swift manner.

Lee was to spend the rest of Saturday at meetings of the East Asia Summit forum, an 18-nation group that includes the United States and Russia. U.S. President Barack Obama has been in Bali for the meetings.

Obama's attendance has been a focus of South Korean media attention due to the possibility of him meeting with Lee to talk about the free trade agreement between the two countries, though officials said such a meeting is unlikely.

The trade pact, which was approved by the U.S. Congress last month, has been deadlocked in the South Korean parliament as the main opposition Democratic Party has demanded the scrapping of a dispute-settlement clause in the deal that it claims unfairly favors the U.S.

The EAS forum also brings together all five countries that have been negotiating with North Korea for years to end the communist nation's nuclear programs under the six-party talks. The talks involve the two Koreas, China, Japan, Russia and the U.S.

Amazon is rumored to be making a phone

(CNN)..Citing checks of the company's supply chain, an analyst at Citigroup has issued a memo saying the phone may cost less than $200 and likely will be available in the middle of next year, according to multiple news reports in financial publications.
"With the clear success of the Kindle e-Reader over the past 3 years, and Kindle Fire possibly succeeding in the low-priced tablet market, we view this as the next logical step for Amazon," the investor's note said, according to a report in Reuters.
The blog AllThingsD says it's likely the phone would run Google's Android operating system:
"(Mark) Mahaney's note doesn't spell out that the phone will use Google's Android operating system, but it suggests that will be the case by positing that Amazon will need to pay Microsoft an 'OS royalty' -- Microsoft has recently been able to extract royalty payments from other Android hardware partners."
Of course, all of this is completely speculative, and based on one report from one analyst. Amazon did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment on Friday morning, and no on knows for sure if the company is working on a phone.
But it's interesting to tech journalists and investors in part because Amazon is creeping further from its roots as an e-commerce website and into new areas of technology, including hardware development.
The company's Kindle e-reader has been a hit for years, and Amazon this week put its new tablet, the Kindle Fire, on the market for $200. Reviewers say the Kindle Fire isn't amazing -- not as functional as the iPad -- but they're generally impressed with it given its much-lower price.
The Apple iPad sells for $500 to $830.
The Amazon phone would cost the company $150 to $170 to make, and Amazon -- always one to offer low prices, even when it loses money on a sale -- likely would offer the phone for close to that price, Peter Kafka writes at AllThingsD.
Still, all of this buzz about an Amazon phone raises a larger question:
Would you want to buy it?
This is completely anecdotal, but when Mike Elgan, a Silicon Valley tech columnist, asked this question of his followers on Google+ he got back plenty of "no's."
Some of the responses from his followers:
"I don't even know how well their tablet works, much less an OS for the phone."
"-1."
"No."
"Something that belongs on +The Onion news network :)"
"Amazon is going in the wrong direction."
Others were more enthusiastic, if the price is right.
"$150 with no contract required would be an awesome deal, especially for the 40% or so of people that don't have a smart phone. my father in law wants an iPhone but not the data plan fee."

Don't Forget About Belgian Chocolate

When he got lost looking for a shortcut to India in the late 1400s, Christopher Columbus found the delicious treat known as chocolate in the New World. It is commonly believed that the ancient Aztecs were to have drunk chocolate a long time before anyone else in the world even knew of its existence. In its original formulation, it was a very bitter concoction created from the roasted seeds of cocoa and mixed with spices. In the Americas it was considered to be a sacred drink that was enjoyed by the Aztecs but only the very elite of their society could afford it. The Aztecs were not ignorant of the value of the cocoa bean and began using it as part of their monetary system and to buy their gold.

The treat that got its start in the New World is the same that would become known as Belgian chocolate, which is the original recipe that was kept secret by the Spanish Aristocrats. The nobility couldn't keep the success of the drink from spreading to other European countries however, and it became widespread. The European nobles experimented with the recipe and were the first to add sugar to it, which made it much more drinkable then the previously bitter drink originated by the Aztecs. Medical practitioners even professed that it cured certain diseases because it held such a high and sacred value. When chocolate arrived in Belgium it was considered to be a magnificent gift, due to all of the history that came with it and the legends of its medicinal effect that it was told to have. The Belgian confectionary created the praline filling for the chocolate in 1912, which was packaged to give out as special gifts to others. The delicacy soon became known as Belgian chocolate because of the unique filling the Belgians created in rich milk chocolate.

To make the special chocolate it is first taken from large pods that come from the cocoa tree, and then the cocoa seeds or beans are taken from the pods. The beans are then sun dried and delivered to the chocolate makers. Once the Belgians get the beans they roast them and crush them into the cocoa powder that they make the Belgian chocolate with. They then add the cocoa butter that comes from the beans and add that to the powder, sugar, and the milk powder.

The Belgian chocolate makers are very choosy with the cocoa powder that they allow for use in the making of Belgian chocolate and will only allow the finest quality to be used. They use the same discretion when it comes to picking the ingredients they use to make their chocolate filling that is known as praline. They make this product by hand so that they can be sure to bring out only the finest possible chocolate. The pride in their product also leads them to choose the cocoa beans by hand as well so that only the best possible source product is sued in the making of Belgian Chocolate.
